You will need
One or two small nibbled black waterproof ink technical pens a .005 or 0.1; 0.2 or a 0.3, I favor the first three but if you plan on working slightly larger then the bigger sizes might prove useful to you. These normally go up to 0.8.
A good pencil sharpener or craft knife (retractable blade type).
I also like to work with water soluble graphite pencils but you needn’t worry too much about these, I will bring a few with me.
A small watercolor set (or your favorite set) below is a suggested palette but we can work with what you have.
A mixing palette, your watercolor set might have these in built.
A selection of brushes, sizes 4, 6 & 8, a flat wash brush and a rigger brush will suffice but again you can bring what you like.
A water color pad orb lock of 140 lb or heavier paper in NOT, Rough or Hot Pressed. If in doubt bring NOT or Hot pressed for line and wash work.
Some masking fluid(this is not critical).
25 mm Masking Tape
Lemon Yellow; Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cadmium Red Pale, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue,Ultramarine Blue, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber*,Indian Red* and Payne’s Gray*. A tube of white Gouache.
Colors marked * are colors I use but are purely optional, there are many ways to create colors. Hues will be OK and student quality paints are fine though for the best results artists water colors are more desirable.
A lightweight sketching easel, and chair or stool, an umbrella. These are all optional as you may be happy to find a seat and work on your lap. A hat or visor and sunblock/lotion as the weather is going to be wonderful!
I work in all medium sand am happy for you to bring your favorite medium to work in. I may also take Acrylics, Gouache or pastels depending on the weight of my bags!
A furniture designer and maker by trade I had always drawn and later turned my attention to painting and though I still make the occasional piece of furniture I have focused on painting for the last twenty five years or so. Having been inspired by my first sight of Constable’s ‘Haywain’ when I was 11 years old I decided to teach myself to paint and landscape has ever since been my favorite subject matter. Many years ago now I was told that I was a good teacher and had the knack of inspiring others to have a go and teaching my painting techniques. I now run many painting holidays in Europe, undoubtedly the jewel in the crown being the Greek Island of Samos. I demonstrate and run workshops for art societies and groups in the UK covering many mediums and genres.
I am a Professional Associate and promoter with the SAA (Society for All Artists), for whom I demonstrate at live shows and have also done some television demonstrations for their ‘A Splash Of Paint’ series, I am also a featured artist and product ambassador with Winsor and Newton and have written a book on the subject of‘Landscapes in ‘Artisan’ Water- Mixable Oils’. I love to paint and am privileged to be able to devote most of my time to my passion. I work in most mediums with landscapes and seascapes being the subject matter that really inspires me to pick up my brushes in international art competitions at ‘The Patching’, the ‘Its All About Art Show’ in London and 5 awards in the international on-line competitions run by The Light, Space and Time Gallery. I have over the last three years received these awards for landscapes, seascapes and even a self portrait (no one was more surprised than I). I am 58 years old and enjoying life, I always look forward to meeting my next students and starting my next painting!
The attraction of Samos for me is the fantastic light, the magnificent scenery, the history, culture, friendliness, food, wine, pace of life and the sheer joy of painting it all! Samos is famous for so much, come and dis-cover it for yourself! It is well worth looking at the following sites for further information regarding the Island and the Anema Hotel.
